Common Blockchain Use Cases in Energy

For all the time and energy (pun intended) that the world poured into finding use cases for blockchain in the energy industry, the exact amount is still rather low. What happened?

I remember exploring use cases a few years ago, and we derived roughly 5-6 unique cases. This was in 2017, and everybody was diving on finding the most/best/hyped use cases. Some sources have claimed to have a higher number of use cases, but when you look at a sufficiently abstract level, the 5-6 cases still stand. Whether you are P2P trading electricity or natural gas; it still is P2P trading to me.

So far, my response to ‘what use cases do you see’ has not changed all that much and it still is:

  • P2P Energy - The Trading with your neighbours.

  • REC - Renewable Energy Certificates.

  • EV Roaming - Leveraging micro-transactions between cars and chargers.

  • Settlement of Trades/Transactions.

  • Logistics - Creating a Single Source of Truth for all parties involved.

This low number is not to say there will not be any more use cases, but we have to get more exposure in these cases to come up with the next generation of use cases. Our thinking has not kept up with these developments.
