There is never a dull moment online when reading on the next big thing for the energy industry. Innovation in the energy sector is a hot topic. Some see this as a battle to be fought — a struggle with too much friendly fire, in my opinion. Considering that most of these innovations are aiming for the same, sustainable target, these fights are unproductive at best.
Winner Takes All?
What I feel that a lot of discussions have in common is a perception that there is a 'One Size Fits All'-solution. A 'One Size Fits All' that can be applied everywhere, anywhere. If that indeed were the case, I bet we would not be having these discussions anymore. The bigger picture should always be to create a more sustainable world.
Not A Zero-Sum Game
The ideal solution depends so much on the location or the use. One product will work like a charm in one case, but not so well in another situation. The fighting between solutions that are both aiming for a sustainable future is fighting the wrong battle.
Solar vs Wind?
A conflict between solar and wind is not helping. Solar works in sunny locations, while wind fares better in others. Their shared target should be to replace fossil power.
Hydrogen vs Batteries?
A conflict between hydrogen and batteries is not helping. Both have a similar goal, but a different road and application. Again, this is not a zero-sum game, and both should have a common goal.
Heat Pumps vs Geothermal?
A conflict between heat pumps or geothermal is not helping. Heat pumps can be used to heat homes. Geothermal can be used to heat homes as well. Both focus on heating houses. Both have a different scale to apply. Not a zero-sum game.
Tesla vs Other EV's?
A conflict between Tesla and other EV models is not helping. Last but not least, this looks to rest on strong brand loyalty. Both are trying to electrify our transportation. Again, not a zero-sum game.
No One Size Fits All
Truly people should focus on what the goal is; achieving a sustainable future. It is a massive effort and requires all hands on deck. We have to do this together. All the energy spent on fighting allies for the same cause is energy wasted. There is no one-size-fits-all.
