Innovation in Energy

Helping the Energy Industry make Innovation Happen

When you work in the Energy Industry, the Energy Transition is top of mind for everyone around you. Does your company seem to ignore innovation and embrace the status quo? How do you make sure you don't miss the boat, or perhaps worse, dive in too early? What does it take and what can go wrong? Here is a practical framework to deal with uncertainty to navigate the new.

With 15 years of experience in the Energy Industry and Innovation, I have found that success hinges on three components:

  • Identifying Opportunities. Understanding what is out there and what is coming, so you can embrace and build the future instead of having it hit you by surprise.

  • Execution. Implementation of Innovation means dealing with a lot of unknowns and uncertainties. Doing this in a legacy environment is challenging, but the same holds for startups on a limited runway.

  • Building Ecosystems. Today's challenges are best tackled together with partners. Finding them and your common ground is a challenge, keeping everybody on board and aligned even more so.

I am always happy to discuss my best practices on how I help the Energy Industry make innovation happen.

Identifying Opportunities

It is easy to spot a wall or a gap. It is hard to detect a swelling tsunami that will crush you much later. In innovation identifying the opportunities out there takes time and skill. Identifying which innovations are right for you, now or in the future is part art, part science.

With my engineering background and entrepreneurial spirit, I love the interaction between technology and business. I am a voracious reader and follow all new developments like a hawk. From my experience, I can quickly assess if and what the impact of such a development can become. I also keep an eye on adjacent industries and fields of science and can give you a quick understanding of the abstract concepts ahead.

Execution

Following a standard recipe or procedure is your bread and butter. Running a project which ventures into unknown territory is not for the faint of heart. Procedures can steer you off the cliff and set your auto-pilot to failure.

With 15 years of experience with innovation in the energy sector at both corporate and startup companies, I am an expert on how to innovate within a legacy environment and when starting boot-strapped from scratch.

Ecosystem Building

The old saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”, resonates with me. Executing a quick experiment in isolation. But to achieve great results and overcome the global challenges we face, we need to work together. Finding the right partners to work with and build up your ecosystem takes time. Sometimes the best bet is to work closely with your competitors; not for the faint of heart.

Having worked with smaller projects in isolation or building an ecosystem as part of the roadmap, I can advise best on how to operate. Fast, or far. You are safely isolated in a lab, or out in the real world cooperating with your competitors.

Ecosystem Challenges

The top reasons busy executives in the energy industry are facing difficulty building ecosystems around their companies are:

Understanding

A lack of understanding or missing a shared language.

Coopetition

The uncomfortable feeling of having to work together with your competitors.

Thinking

Thinking for the ecosystem as a whole instead of per single stakeholder.
