To operationalise best practices for Asset Information Management, this project looked at Digital Transformation and collected feedback from numerous interviews.

TenneT benefitted from:

  • Leading Industry Insights
  • Independant Consultant to facilitate the exploration
  • Scientific basis supported by a Nyenrode MBA paper

Situation

TenneT faced a challenge around item designation, where a new Reference Designation System (RDS) was introduced a few years ago. TenneT aimed to have one new, future-ready RDS that the international contractors of TenneT could use. Only the new RDS was received and utilised differently by the stakeholders involved. In practice, the results needed to align with the ambition of having one future RDS. In theory, practice and theory are the same. It was transparent for TenneT and the stakeholders; for this new RDS, that was yet to be the case.

TenneT was looking for someone to speak to all stakeholders to verify what was needed to get everybody aligned and on board again—a person who could get to the core of the problem or, in their words, a person who could “make it happen.” Also, since the team tasked with this challenge was relatively new, advice on the organisation of this team was also sought.

Service

To help TenneT to resolve this challenge, research was done. Stakeholders were interviewed and introduced to each other. Pain points were collected, plotted and clustered to make them addressable. It was made apparent who should have ownership of specific elements. The comprehensive training material was created using various internal sources as a general introduction to RDS. In cases where ownership was initially unclear, it was seized with a “Can Do”-mentality to move forward to a solution.

Within the team context, I have acted as a confidant and helped new team members get up to speed. My fresh perspective allowed me to provide feedback to the team and individuals. This feedback was perceived as non-offensive and not sugar-coated, allowing for a bigger-picture view for those involved.

Execution

TenneT enjoyed the well-structured approach that was displayed. My ability to quickly dive into new environments and domains helped get the stakeholders on board early. Being open and sharing all the findings created a higher trust during the process.

TenneT had also hoped to use my Futuristic strength more and advance the training efforts, but we had to conclude that TenneT was not ready for that leap yet.

What TenneT liked:

“I like how Roelof enhanced the ‘bridge function’ of our team and connected theory and practice in the way that he did, with a holistic approach, a helicopter perspective and a much-appreciated dose of humour!”

Results

As a result of these efforts, the fuss around RDS has calmed down significantly. Stakeholders understand better where this is going. Their concerns were considered and used in the next update on RDS. There is stability in the team, which has increased the level at which they perform now.
