Innovation Energy Drains - One Step Forward, One Step Back

There always seems a valid reason to reconsider. Who ever said innovation in energy was an easy task?

There always seems a valid reason to reconsider. Whoever said innovation in energy was an easy task? We learnt something new. Let’s go back to last week’s decision. Time to make a better one now. It can feel like you have taken a step forward, then a step back again. Depending on what motivated the reversal, it does not have to be true.

The two main drivers to take a step back in most innovation projects are:

  1. We learned something new.

  2. The quest for perfection.

"Perfection is the enemy of Progress"

Learning

Learning has allowed you to grow. It can feel like a step back, but this time you know more. It can make perfect sense to take these lessons and revisit that previous step, creating a better decision. That is if all parties agree, it can lead to a better choice.

Perfection

Some people naturally strive for perfection. They are always looking to improve their work. And as with so many things in life, you can still make something even better. So there will always be an opportunity to ask for a step back and revisit a recent decision. To make it more perfect.

Good Enough

At some point, you will have to ship. Delivering gets results. Results bring income. Income enables the next step. Sometimes things are ‘good enough’ to send. Perfection is the enemy of progress.

Forward Momentum

If all the lessons learnt are not driving towards delivering on time, we have learned a lot, but not achieved any forward momentum. Balance your need for progress with the length of the runway you have left still.

Are you in doubt if a step back is right, or would it cost you the project? Let me help you see prevent the common mistakes and navigate around them.
