What are you looking out for in 2020? What innovations in energy do you expect to rise to the challenge of the energy transition? Below are some of the technologies which will continue to grow and play a more significant role in 2020:

  1. Blockchain

  2. AI

  3. AR

A complex system such as the Energy Grid will benefit from Blockchain and AI-like technologies.

Blockchain in Energy

In 2019 we have seen a small number of projects continue after the departure of projects in 2018. Those who kept at it had a valid business case, something worth pursuing. In 2019 we saw the chain from EWF go into production, in 2020 we will see more and more projects reach the production stage. They will add value and power the energy transition; the world knows how badly that is needed.

AI/ML/RPA in Energy

Combining Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robot Process Automation all in one category, we have seen this being deployed mostly at back end systems. These systems are maintaining an administration, or dealing with queries from customers. But no systems yet that will operate on its own in the energy grid. I expect with the rising comfort from the experience so far; this technology will control grids and networks. Optimise the balance of power and control production plants to meet demand.

AR/VR in Energy

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality have always been an attractive prototype. For example, with workers in the field doing repairs and having this as a Heads Up Display (HUD). Providing context and information as needed to get things done. Systems so far have always been bulky, but with the progress seen in 2019, in 2020 we will see more of these systems truly shine in the field. The technology looks good enough on our smartphones and tablets to play games on; this push is going to happen.

The 2020 Outlook

So, what developments are you looking forward to? Any thoughts on the three above?
