When you are implementing innovations in the energy industry, you have to deal with assumptions and uncertainties. There is no way around that. If you’re not facing that, you are just going to repeat yesterday. No shame in that, but that is not innovation. But at some point, you have to tackle those assumptions. Fill in the blanks so you can charge ahead.

Assuming Your Way Forward

Filling in a blank with an assumption can allow your project to move forward. But you better get to test your hypothesis. Such assumptions left unchallenged, do not provide a sound foundation to build the rest of your project. How certain are you about this assumption? What can you do to check it? Who can verify that it is correct?

Challenge the Assumptions

Map out your assumptions and uncertainties. Question them. Devise a method to test them. Validate, or invalidate the questions. Try to asses each of them how much your current project would suffer if the assumption would prove to be not true. Test the biggest project killer as soon as reasonably as possible.

Building, Wish for Wish

Starting with your project, you have to deal with uncertainties. There is no other way. Do not wait for perfect; else you will never begin. Do not let assumptions go unchallenged for too long. Build the dream. Use your wishes and creativity to fill in the blanks.

Building, Brick by brick

Building on your project, you will put your assumptions to the test. Did your wish prove right, or did you make a wrong guess? Each test has the potential to solidify the project. Making things more certain.

“Wishing does not make it true.”

Wishing does not make it true

While wishing does not make it true, it helps you get going and start your project. Waiting for perfect is an excuse to delay indefinitely. Starting and challenging your assumptions gets you exposure and experience.

Do not ignore the limits of reality. But do try to look beyond the borders of today.

Need help challenging your assumptions? Or staring at some blanks, wondering what you need to get the project rolling?
